Over the Wire (OTW) is a project that celebrates SOVA’s remote location by challenging students to complete projects as directed by an artist outside of Dawson City. Communicating via Skype and email, students interpret the artist’s instructions and create a local work that is then reproduced and distributed across Canada.
2015 OTW Artists
Cooper Battersby and Emily Vey Duke have been working collaboratively since June 1994. Their work has been broadcast and exhibited around the world.
In 2010 they were shortlisted for the prestigious Sobey Art Award. The book The Beauty Is Relentless: The Short Movies of Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby, was published in 2012. In 2015, they were awarded the grand prize from the European Media Arts Festival for their most recent work, Dear Lorde. In the fall of 2015, Duke’s book The Illuminations, a collaboration with Shary Boyle, was published by Oakville Galleries.
Their work is distributed by Video Data Bank in Chicago, Argos in Brussels, V-Tape in Toronto and Video Out in Vancouver. Duke and Battersby teach at Syracuse University in Central New York.
