Tuition and Other Costs

Tuition and Fees

Yukon SOVA is accredited through the Applied Arts Division of Yukon College, which is a Designated Educational Institution recognized by the Government of Canada. As such, Canadian applicants are eligible to take advantage of the Canada Student Loan Program,  RESPs, or other programs administered through CanLearn.

Tuition fees for the SOVA Foundation Year program are determined by Yukon College and are due at the time of registration.

Studio & Technology fees cover the use of all program supplies, studio furniture and equipment and current software as well as field trips, guest lecturers, life models, and artists’ visits and workshops. The technology fee also includes wireless internet access, an email account and student registration and records keeping in the Yukon College student system.

Books & Supplies may be purchased on-site at the SOVA Art Supply Store. Course instructors will provide students with complete lists of required course materials, books and supplies at the beginning of each semester. We recommend that each student budget approximately $300-500 per semester for textbooks and art supplies.

An Equipment Security Deposit of $500 is also required; it can be paid at Yukon SOVA in Dawson City during orientation and covers the use of tools, A/V equipment and library materials. Each student is also issued a 13” MacBook laptop, a Nikon Coolpix P5000 camera, and a tool kit for their personal use for the duration of the program. This deposit will be returned to students at the end of the school year, provided that all borrowed equipment and library materials have been returned undamaged and equipment and facility are in good condition.

Accommodation expenses range from $500-1 000 / month, but students are encouraged to budget at the higher end of the scale to ensure that they have enough funds to secure adequate housing in what is sometimes a tight rental market. For more information about accommodation, click on Housing.

Food costs can be a little more expensive in Dawson than in urban, southern centres. Selection is also somewhat limited. For more information on food options and costs, click on Living in Dawson. Students with special dietary needs, or culturally specific diets, are encouraged to contact SOVA for more information.

Miscellaneous costs include things such as cold weather clothing, personal items (toiletries, phone cards, recreational activities, and travel costs). Visit the Living in Dawson page for more information.
